Malting barley is used for the production of barley malt required in the alcoholic fermentation of beer and whisky. For brewing purposes only malting varieties can be cultivated, which are assessed in terms of quality properties of malt and wort, as well as grain properties.  High-quality malt may be obtained from fully mature, healthy, and undamaged grain of one variety (mould, dirt and pest free), coming from similar growing conditions, of the same colour (light yellow delicate husk), and similar kernel weight. Specific process requirements include:

 
  • protein content of up to 11.5% in the dry weight
  • germination energy above 95%
  • alignment (accuracy) of grain above 85%
 
To obtain good malting quality of grain, crops must be supplied with appropriate nutrients. Phosphorus, potassium, and magnesium - fertilisation with these components is as for feed barley. Nitrogen - malting barley should be very carefully fertilised with nitrogen so as not to exceed the acceptable content of protein in the grain. Overfertilisation with nitrogen also has an adverse effect on the alignment of grain. Sulphur and trace elements are also essential for the correct use of nitrogen.

Foliar feeding plays a very important role in the cultivation of barley, as its root system is clearly weaker than in other cereals, thus nutrient uptake through the roots is hindered. It allows to supplement macronutrients fertilising (including supply of easily assimilable phosphorus which is extremely important), and to satisfy the malting barley demand for trace elements, among which particularly vital are: manganese (MIKROVIT MANGANESE or MIKROCHELAT Mn-13) and copper (MIKROVIT COPPER or MIKROCHELAT Cu-15). Nitrogen transformation catalyst is molybdenum (MIKROVIT MOLYBDENUM), which in the winter varieties increases the resistance to low temperatures when supplied in the autumn. When the soil has a poor organic matter content or during drought conditions, it may be necessary to apply foliar feeding with boron (MIKROVIT BORON). Due to the high water, thermal, soil and nutrient requirements, barley is exposed to numerous stresses.
 
 
STRESS CONTROL SYSTEM (SCS-MALTING BARLEY) a strategy of supporting the natural resistance of crops through the use of INTERMAG stimulants and activators, effectively improves Malting barley natural resistance to adverse environmental and cultivation conditions, hence reducing the risk of loss of part of the yield. Foliar feeding of crops with suitable nutrients (PLONVIT fertilisers) and promoting the growth of their natural resistance (OPTYSIL, TYTANIT biostimulants) improve proper crop development, health, and resistance to stress. All these treatments discussed in further tabs, significantly impact the increase in yield and its good quality properties.
